The Bowen Street Community Centre and Playgroups In the early 1980s Sr. Lois Thomas (Maternal and Child Health Nurse) encouraged mothers of the centre to seek from Council the upgrading of an empty room behind the MCHC from which to provide a range of family services. Thus BSCC was created out of the determination and fundraising efforts of local families. Soon demand exceeded space, so the committee of young mothers researched their needs, lobbied Council and ultimately, after four years of hard work, moved into the existing purpose built facility by Christmas 1991 and refurbished in early 2005. And we're still here! By joining a BSCC playgroup you and your child/ren gain: clean, safe, attractive facility where children learn to play and explore location - close proximity to the Maternal Child and Health Centre, Bowen Gardens, bus stops and two local Primary schools home maintenance - your house will not get trashed and we provide a range of teas and coffee! a weekly permanent place to meet where your child becomes familiar with and confident in a stimulating environment with plenty of quality toys an informal playgroup environment where there is no pressure to attend every week but a sense of structure and organisation is offered the opportunity to be part of your local community - don't be isolated an instant network of friends for your children who are of their own age and live near each other - their own social circle an instant support group of other parents who live near each other; and an opportunity to make lifelong friends for you and your family an opportunity to interact with other playgroups with children older than your own - learning from others' experiences.
